Planes, Cars and White Bracelets
Just off the plane @ JFK in NYC. Bleary-eyed and feeling alone and detached.
As I made my way outside to the curb, I caught a glimpse of a white bracelet on the wrist of a 9-year-old girl. I stopped her mom and said, "Is that a ONE bracelet on your daughter's arm?"
Her mom told me how they had been to the U2 concert and her daughter had been taken by the ONE campaign. They signed the declaration and now the little girl (I'm sorry I didn't ask her name) is saving her money to help kids in Africa.
I told her mom that she and her daughter ROCKED!
It makes me believe that perhaps, just perhaps, we could make extreme poverty vanish!!
Just look at the coverage on NBC this week. (If you haven't kept pace, check out the ONE Blog @ www.one.org/blog/ )
Our family is preparing for another trip to Ethiopia at the end of June. I wonder how many white bracelets I might see between now and then? Each one seems to give me a sense of hope and, strangely, a sense of community.
